Na sequência de seu álbum de 2018 “Sincerely, S. Love x”, a Tapete Records apresenta o novo disco “LOVE, SEX and DEATH etc” de Simon Love a 8 de Abril de 2022.
As 12 músicas, escritas principalmente entre 2017 e 2019, foram gravadas em dois lotes em Julho e Novembro de 2020, depois de 6 meses de ensaios com o plano inicial de gravá-las ao vivo o mais possível num quarto. Simon diz: “Apart from COVID-19 and all the death and hand-washing, it was surprisingly the easiest album I think I’ve ever made! We were laser focussed when it came to do these songs and it shows”.
Oscilando entre canções de amor (“Me And You” e “I Will Always Love You Anyway”), canções de ódio (“The Fuck-Up” e “I Love Everybody In The Whole Wide World (Except You)”) e passando por todos os pontos intermédios, a peça central do álbum é o épico pop de 7 minutos de duração “L-O-T-H-A-R-I-O”. “That song started early one morning when a photo popped up on Facebook. I couldn’t sleep and seeing it reminded me that it was taken the evening I almost had a one-night stand. I then wrote out a series of Tweets about what happened (a lot happened) and originally, I thought it could be a poem to put on an album sleeve Bob Dylan style, but somebody replied saying, “It sounds like a Leonard Cohen song” so instead it became a tune. I played it solo for the first time when we toured Europe in the autumn of 2018. It gave the band a much needed toilet/drink/fag break in the set.”
As influências não musicais para este disco incluem a sua esposa, o seu filho (“Au Revoir My Dude” foi escrito como um guia para a vida), o governo conservador corrupto (“I Will Dance” e “You’re On Your Own”), as ex-namoradas (“North Road”) e a sua incapacidade de perceber sinais (“Yvonne”), enquanto musicalmente Simon estava apontando (mas nem sempre acertando directamente) a Nick Lowe, Kevin Ayers, Silver Jews, Ween e The Kinks entre 1971 e 1975.
O título “LOVE, SEX and DEATH etc” vem do facto de que cada música menciona ou faz referência ao amor, sexo e/ou morte na letra. Esse facto torna este um álbum conceptual, mas mesmo sendo um álbum conceptual, não há uma linha directa nem narrativa directa, por isso há liberdade para se ouvir o disco como se quiser. Simon diz: “I’ve asked Spotify to put the shuffle back on for this and I’ve received word back that says my email is very important to them and they’ll get back to me in 5-7 working days”
